A search engine is a software system designed to carry out web searches, which means to search the World Wide Web in a systematic way for particular information specified in a textual web search query. The search results are generally presented in a line of results, often referred to as search engine results pages (SERPs). How Do Search Engines Work?

1. Crawling

Search engines operate by crawling hundreds of billions of pages using their own web crawlers. These web crawlers are sometimes referred to as search engine bots or spiders. 2. Indexing

After a page is crawled, the next step is to index its content. The indexed page is stored in a giant database, from where it can later be retrieved. 3. Processing

When a search request comes from a user, the search engine processes it, i.e., it compares the search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database.

4. Calculating Relevancy

Since it is likely that more than one page contains the search string, the search engine starts calculating the relevancy of each of the pages in its index to the search string.

5. Retrieving Results

The last step in search engines’ activities is retrieving the best matched results. Basically, it is nothing more than simply displaying them in the browser – i.e., the endless pages of search results that are sorted from the most relevant to the least relevant sites.
