The Channels, Ranked by What They Actually Do

Each channel brings a different kind of visitor. SEO and organic search bring people already searching for an answer, which tends to convert well but takes months to build. Paid ads, on search and social, bring volume on demand, but that volume stops the moment the investment stops. Email and direct traffic bring people who already know the brand, the highest intent group, but only as large as the list itself. Referral and social traffic sit in between, useful for awareness but usually lower intent than search.

How to Actually Measure It

Total visitor count is close to meaningless on its own. The number that matters is visitors by channel, set against what each channel converts into, a lead, a purchase, a call. We look at traffic acquisition channel by channel rather than as one blended total, because a site can grow total traffic while its highest-value channel, say organic search, is actually shrinking underneath a spike in low-intent social clicks.

A second thing worth tracking is new versus returning visitors by channel. A channel that only ever brings new visitors who never come back is doing top of funnel work; one with a healthy returning visitor share is doing retention work, and the two deserve different goals and different investment.
